Ithaca, New York

The village of Groton New York is a small town community located in upstate New York’s northeastern portion of Tompkins County, only 15 miles from the City of Ithaca New York (named for the Greek Island of Ithaca) of the southern shore of Cayuga Lake in the central New York Finger Lakes Region. It is best known for being the home to Cornell University-an Ivy League School with almost 20,000 students studying on Cornell's Ithaca campus. While Ithaca College is located just south of the city in the Town of Ithaca with 6,300 students the college is strongly linked to the city, further adding to Ithaca's strong 'College Town' focus and atmosphere. The city is the center of the Ithaca Tompkins Metropolitan area (which also contains the separate municipalities of Town of Ithaca, Village of Cayuga Heights, Village of Lansing, and other towns and villages in Tompkins County) The City of Ithaca is the county seat of Tompkins County, in 2004 Ithaca had a population 29,952.

Ithaca was nationally know for the Ithaca Gun Company maker of the highly-values shotgun and Ithaca Calendar clocks.  Cornell University was formed by Ezra Cornell in 1868 and Ithaca College was founded as Ithaca Conservatory of music in 1892. During the early 20th century Ithaca was an important center in the silent film industry. Eventually the film industry centralized in Hollywood which offered the possibilities of year round filming.

Ithaca was founded on flat land at the southern end of Cayuga Lake, the city ultimately spread to the adjacent steep hillsides, and a number of streams that flow to the valley from east and west have cut deep gorges with waterfalls.  Ithaca experiences a moderate continental climate, with snowy winters and hot humid summer's. Due to the climates created by the impact of the Finger Lakes Area, the area is adequate for grape growing-as such the area is home to many wineries.

Ithaca new York supports the farmer's Market, many theatre's, civic orchestra's, parklands. Ithaca also hosts what is described as the third largest used book sale in the US.  Ithaca New York is in the rural Finger Lakes Region about 250 miles northwest of NY City.
